When you are making and drinking homemade kombucha at some point you will wonder how much kombucha should I drink a day? Is drinking kombucha daily a good idea?

how much kombucha should you drink?

Kombucha is enjoyed by millions of people around the world everyday and for many people drinking kombucha daily is a part of their routine that they don’t think about; however, some people have dietary restrictions and need to watch more closely what they consume.

In addition, drinking kombucha can have minor side effects that one should consider when determining how much kombucha to drink per day.

How Much Kombucha Should you Drink?

Without scientific consensus on how much kombucha one can safely drink per day the answer is it depends. It is well known that there are many known health benefits of drinking kombucha; however, that does not mean a person should use it as their primary beverage throughout the day.

If you’ve never had kombucha and you are concerned about how your body might react to it, start by drinking a small serving, about 2-4 oz. Drink the same amount of water and see how it makes you feel. If you feel well, drink the same amount the next day and gradually increase to portion to 8-16 oz.

I recommend not drinking more than 16 ounces of kombucha per day – the size of a typical store-bought bottle of kombucha. Of course this varies by person but it is a general guideline.

Other Considerations

  • Do you currently consume probiotics? Kombucha is packed with probiotics, which can cause gastrointestinal distress until you are accustomed to consuming them (much like with eating beans.) If you’re new to drinking kombucha, I recommend that you start at 2 ounces per day, then increase your portion gradually.
  • What is your sugar consumption? kombucha contains relatively low amounts of sugar-about the same amount as fruit juice-you prefer to drink less if your goal is to consume less sugar
  • Do you have caffeine sensitivity? Eight ounces of kombucha typically contains about 10 mg of caffeine. Caffeine can cause jitters, nausea, nervousness, and digestive distress for those who aren’t used to it.
  • Are you sensitive to alcohol? Homemade kombucha generally contains 0.5% to 2% alcohol by volume. This is important to know if you’re sensitive or allergic to alcohol. Additionally, if you are taking any medications which may have side-effects from the consumption of even trace amounts of alcohol should reconsider the risks of drinking kombucha.
  • Are you pregnant or breastfeeding? Kombucha is unpasteurized and not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
