In a world where maintaining a healthy lifestyle is at the forefront of our priorities, finding delicious and nutritious ways to fuel our bodies is essential. Today, we’re making a green smoothie that combines the gut-friendly benefits of kombucha with the nutritional powerhouse that is kale.

Kombucha, a fermented tea known for its probiotic properties, joins forces with kale, a leafy green superfood, to create a harmonious blend that not only satisfies your cravings but also promotes overall well-being.

I like to make a power green smoothie as a mid-morning or afternoon snack and some days I will use it as a substitute for breakfast.

One day I decided to try making it with Clean Green Kombucha as the liquid instead of water or almond milk which has the benefit of even more greens and the kombucha adds a nice tart background that contrasts with the rich leafy greens. The result is this Green Goddess Kombucha Smoothie.

The basic recipe uses kale and spinach (or just one if that’s all you have), Greek yogurt,  a banana and peanut butter powder. You can also add any one of a multitude of other healthy foods like chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax or substitute any other fresh fruit for the banana.

Adjust the amount of kombucha and ice to find a consistency and temperature you like. I prefer my smoothies a bit liquid and not freezing cold so I tend to add more kombucha and less ice.

What is a Kombucha mocktail?

A mocktail is similar to a cocktail, but without the alcohol. A Kombucha Mocktail features kombucha as a wash in the base of the mocktail.

There are several reasons people choose not to drink such as health, religious, or a personal preference. Kombucha mocktails are great option for those who want to enjoy a satisfying social beverage while abstaining from alcohol. Just because mocktails do not have alcohol doesn’t mean they have to be sweet, boring or unsatisfying.

Kombucha mocktails, in addition to being delicious and satisfying, also contain additional health benefits. Apart from omitting alcohol, additional benefits come from the probiotics and antioxidants in the kombucha, especially in fruit flavored kombuchas.

Blender: A blender capable of pulverizing ice and making a smoothie is needed for the best results.

Glasses: Two glasses or travel mugs for serving your smoothies.

Ingredients to make a Green Goddess Kombucha Smoothie

Clean Green Kombucha: Clean Green Kombucha forms the base of the smoothie and provides a delicious tart base. It is kombucha infused with moringa oleifera, spirulina, kale and spinach.

Kale Kale has long been known as king of the super healthy greens. Kale is a popular vegetable and a member of the cabbage family along with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens and Brussels sprouts.

Kale Is Loaded with Powerful Antioxidants Like Quercetin and Kaempferol, It Is an Excellent Source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K which is essential for blood clotting. Kale contains numerous cancer-fighting substances and it is high in beta-carotene, an antioxidant that the body can turn into vitamin A

Spinach: spinach is considered a superfood as it is loaded with nutrients in a low-calorie/high fiber package. This leafy vegetable is also beneficial for your skin, hair and bones.
Spinach helps in controlling diabetes. It has a low glycemic index (GI) meaning it does not cause a spike in your blood sugar levels. Here is an chart with the glycemic index of over 60 foods

It is also an excellent source of fiber and low in calories, making it an ideal food to be used in recipes for diabetes. In addition, spinach is believed to prevent cancer, reduce blood sugar and promotes good bone health. Spinach also aids in weight loss, reduces hypertension, has anti-inflammatory properties and can boost your immunity

Banana: Unripe bananas which still contain the green peel have a bland, grassy flavor and are fairly astringent (puckering) with higher levels of starch and therefore have a “starchier” taste. As bananas ripen they take on a range of fruity flavors such as melon, pineapple, candy and clove notes. Ripe (yellow) bananas have higher sugar concentrations and accordingly taste sweeter. Overripe bananas (with a brown peel) contains notes of vanilla, honey and rum.

Greek Yogurt: is strained to remove most of its whey, resulting in a thicker consistency while still preserving the distinctive sour taste of yogurt. Yogurt is high in protein, calcium, vitamins, and live culture, or probiotics, which can improve the gut health.

Peanut butter powder: Peanut Butter Powder is by pressing roasted peanuts to remove most of the oil and then ground into a fine powder. Powdered peanut butter has about 85 percent less fat than regular peanut butter and is essentially protein and fiber.

How to make a Green Goddess Kombucha Smoothie

Making your own Green Goddess Kombucha Smoothie is really easy and fun! Here is an overview of the process:

Blend: Mix the ingredients together with ice and blend at high speed until a smooth consistency is reached.

Fill Glasses: Divide the smoothie evenly between the glasses.

Green Goddess Kombucha Smoothie Recipe

Yield:  2 mocktails • Active time: 5 minutes •  Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

1 bottle Clean Green Kombucha

4 oz power greens such as kale or spinach (you can mix), fresh or frozen

1 Banana

1/2 cup Greek yogurt

1 Tbsp Peanut butter powder, such as PB Fit (affiliate link ↗)

1 Cup ice

Instructions:

Blend: Add, kombucha, greens, peeled banana, Greek yogurt, Peanut Butter powder and ice to bowl of a blender. Cover an process on high until ingredients are chopped into a smooth consistency. Add additional ice and kombucha to achieve desired consistency

Prepare Glasses: Fill two pint sized (16 oz) with with large ice cubes.

Fill: Pour the smoothie into the ice-filled glasses. Top with chia seeds (optional)

Enjoy!

Variations:

Bring some heat – try adding a few small pieces of chili pepper (jalapeno or serrano) to add a little heat to the smoothie.

Ginger to fight inflammation – add about a teaspoon of fresh ginger (roughly chopped first) to the blender before processing to incorporate the taste and anti-inflammatory benefits of ginger into smoothie.

 

Tips & Tricks:

If you have fresh greens that are starting to look tired, put the bag in the freezer and pull them out and directly into your blender for the smoothie.
